Nine More Cut by Tigers

The Tigers now have 36 players remaining in camp after making 9 more cuts this morning. The latest round of cuts includes: Wil Ledezma, Chad Durbin, Lee Gardner, Kevin Hodge, Brian Peterson, Max St. Pierre, Josh Phelps, Reggie Taylor and Ryan Ludwick. Ledezma was optioned to Toledo while the others were assigned to minor league camp. With Troy Percival and Craig Dingman headed for the 60 day disabled list, the Tigers have nine more cuts to make by opening day.

None of today's cuts were big surprises but a few were noteworthy. Ledezma entered spring training with a shot at the fifth starter job but he continued to struggle this spring as he did all last year. Ludwick and Phelps both had good springs but did not fit into the current roster. Both will go to Toledo and provide the Tigers with depth for when the inevitable injuries occur.

  1. Ledezma's too young (and potentially talented) to give up on, but I'm beginning to wonder about him. His chance at a job probably wasn't as good as last year, but an opportunity was still there for the taking, and he didn't perform when needed.

  2. One thing that seems encouraging is that there was more competition this year. I'm excited that both Verlander and Zumaya are going north. Sure, they're going to take their lumps, and it's possible that if things get too rough they might need a Toledo tuneup. But it's awesome to see the future taking shape in the present.

  3. Its a shame Ledezma hasn't developed. He looked very promising during his debut with the Tigers after he was plucked via rule V.

  4. Yes, Ledezma has been a disappointment. I don't know whether it's mental or whether he possibly has an injury he's not telling them about.
