Shields, Rays Stop Tigers

After winning the first 2 games of the series, the Tigers ran into a buzz saw tonight. Impressive young right-hander James Shields held them to 5 hits and 1 run in 7 innings as the Rays pounded the Tigers 7-1. Shields also struck out 9 batters and walked none. The only Tiger run came on a homer by Placido Polanco in the 4th inning. Polanco was also the only Tiger with 2 hits.

Chad Durbin, starting in place of the injured Andrew Miller, allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 4 1/3 innings. The bullpen could not do much to stop the Rays either as Macay McBride, Jason Grilli, Bobby Seay and Zach Miner gave up 4 runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. It should be noted that Grilli was better tonight after getting booed off the field last night. He allowed 2 hits in 2 innings and the 1 run he gave up was let in by Bobby Seay.

The one good piece of news tonight was the return of Gary Sheffield to the line-up. He only had a double in 4 trips but seemed to be swinging better tonight after a few days off to rest his shoulder. Marcus Thames, who homered and singled in 4 trips for the MudHens tonight, will return to the Tigers tomorrow. Tomorrow's game will be at 1.00 PM and will feature a pitching match-up of Jeremy Bonderman and Scott Kazmir.
