The Tigers announced today that highly regarded prospect Jair Jurrjens is going to start against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night. The 21 year old right-hander is 6-1 190 and is probably the the best Tigers pitching prospect yet to pitch in the majors. He has a 3.20 ERA and 94/31 K/BB ratio over 112 2/3 innings in 19 starts for Erie this year. He has been particularly strong in his last 3 starts allowing just 2 earned runs and striking out 24 in 23 innings.
The report on Jurrjens is that he has a fastball in the low 90s with good movement and sometimes reaches the mid 90s. He has good control for such a young pitcher but his curve and change-up are only average and still need work. He is a somewhat raw but exciting prospect and I'm very much looking forward to seeing him pitch this week.
