Hunter, Twins Crush Tigers

There is not much to say about a 16 -4 loss. Starting pitcher Virgil Vasquez had a rough debut and three Tigers relievers didn't do much better. Vazquez, Jason Grilli, Wil Ledezma and Jose Mesa combined to give up 22 hits, 7 walks and a hits batsman. Torri Hunter led the way for the Twins with two home runs, a double and 7 RBI. Three other Twins - Luis Castillo, Michael Cuddyer, Justin Morneau and Jason Kubel - had three hits apiece. It was a bad night tonight but the Tigers did take 2 out of 3 in the dreaded Metrodome, always a tough feat.

Vasquez couldn't keep the ball down and gave up 6 runs on 8 hits in 2 2/3 innings. He won't get a chance to redeem himself anytime soon as it had already been announced before the game that he would be sent back to Toledo and that Tim Byrdak would take his place on the roster. They wanted another reliever for the Red Sox series and, with a line-up including David Ortiz and JD Drew, a left-handed reliever is probably appropriate. Byrdak had a 1.64 ERA and 25/7 K/BB ratio in 22 innings with the Mudhens. His major league stats are ugly: 89 hits, 53 walks 12 home runs and 7.06 ERA in 66 innings.
