Detroit Tigers Prospect Report - 5/19/2007

During the course of the year, I will be giving statistical updates and other information on the Tigers organization. I will cover all the consensus top prospects as well as other noteworthy perfomers. For daily recaps and other news on Tigers prospects, check out Matt Wallace's Take 75 North and Mike Cassidy's Tigers Minor League Blog. This week's team by team summary follows.

Toledo Mud Hens (AAA) 20-22

With 30 walks and 42 strikeouts, 42% of Chris Shelton's 172 plate appearances have resulted in the ball not being put in play. His stat line is .246/.390/.366.

The leading Mudhen hitter is 32 year old outfielder Timo Perez who is batting .327/.363/.565 with 7 home runs.

Virgil Vasquez got shelled in his first start since his one game stint with the Tigers. He allowed 7 runs on 10 hits in 5 innings raising his season ERA to 3.94. He has a 56/11 K/BB ratio in 45 2/3 innings.

Brent Clevlen has a broken finger and will miss about a month of action. He had been off to a very slow start: .207/.296/.296.

Dallas Trahern pitched well in his first start for Toledo start going 6 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks. He also had a 5.0 ground out/air out ratio. He had a 1.88 ERA in 38 1/3 innings for Erie. He had only 22 strikeouts but a very high 3.29 GO/AO.

Erie Sea Wolves (AA) 21-16

Jeff Larish is showing power and patience but not making consistent contact. He is batting .235/.320/.477 with a 18/34 BB/K ratio.

21 year old Jair Jurrjens allowed 1 run on 4 hits and 5 walks to go along with 5 strikeouts in his last start. He now has a 3.11 ERA and a 29/12 K/BB ratio in 37 2/3 innings.

Hard throwing Eulogio De La Cruz is having a solid year as a starter and now has a 3.72 ERA and 45/13 K/BB ratio in 46 IP.

Lakeland (A+) 18-23

Cameron Maybin is batting .317/.434/.486 and has 13 stolen bases. The only negative is his high strikeout rate - 47 K in 142 at bats.

24 year old infielder/outfielder Ovandy Suero is batting .303 with a .397 OBP and leads the league with 30 stolen bases in 31 games. Suero is not considered a top prospect but that stolen base total is fun to follow.

Unheralded 23 year old outfielder Michael Hernandez went 10 for 25 this past week and is now up to .317/.370/.593. He is becoming a very interesting prospect. I'd like to see him get promoted to Erie soon.

22 year old outfielder Justice Justice is also having a solid season batting .293/.394/.534 but has now missed more than a week with a hamstring injury.

23 year old first baseman Ryan Roberson is batting .341 in his last 10 games and is up to .295/.340/.555 in 146 at bats.

West Michigan (A) 22-16

20 year old Gorkys Hernandez is batting .382 in his last 10 games and is now batting .325/.397/.423 with a 13/20 BB/K ratio and 17 stolen bases. He also is reportedly a strong defensive center fielder. He is definitely a prospect to keep an eye on.

23 year old outfielder Deik Scram is batting a sizzling .395 in May and is up to .326/.410/.419 for the year.

21 year old catcher James Skelton is batting .337/.375/.404 in 89 at bats. Skelton has an interesting profile for a catcher as he bats left-handed and has better than average speed.

Scott Sizemore is off to a slow start at .223/.365/.314 but his 22/18 BB/K ratio suggests that better numbers will come eventually.

Chris Cody allowed 3 run in 7 2/3 innings and had 13 strikeouts in his last start. He has a remarkable 1.46 ERA and 58/8 K/BB ratio in 55 1/3 innings.

21 year old lefty Duane Below has a 2.30 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 43 innings.
