Tiger Run Production in 2005

Last week, I discussed team run production using batting average (BA), isolated power (ISO) and isolated walk percentage (IWP). I showed that the 2005 Tigers were 4th in BA and 7th in ISO but only 11th in runs scored. The main reason was because they were last in IWP. In other words, their extreme lack of walks kept their run production down despite a high batting average and moderate power.

The first table below presents these statistics for Tiger players in 2005. The second table shows how the Tigers ranked in each category among 132 American League players with 295 or more plate appearances (PA).

We can see from the tables that almost all of the Tigers ranked in the bottom half of the league in IWP. The exceptions were Carlos Pena (23rd in the league), Brandon Inge (56th) and Magglio Ordonez (63rd). The problem with Pena and Inge is that they did not rank very high in batting average. Ordonez’s problem was lack of power. Several players who figure to get a significant number of plate appearances next year were very deficient in IWP. This includes Ivan Rodriguez (132nd or last in the league), Omar Infante (127th), Nook Logan (106th) and Craig Monroe (102th). Curtis Granderson did not have enough PA to qualify but he also was near the bottom of the league. This is an area where the team will have to improve substantially next year if they want to improve their run production.
