The Tigers made their first 8 cuts of the spring today including most of their top pitching prospects. Pitchers Virgil Vazquez, Jordan Tata and Eulogio DeLaCruz were assigned to Toledo, Kyle Sleeth to Erie and Andrew Miller to Lakeland. In addition, pitcher Jair Jurrjens and catchers Gabe Johnson and Dusty Ryan were assigned to the minor league camp. Jurrjens and Johnson will head to Erie or Toledo to start the season and Ryan will most likely start in Lakeland. It was a little surprising that Tata was cut so early as it was believed he had a chance to make the Tigers roster to start the season. Other than that, there were no big surprises.
Also, Jon Paul Morosi of the Free Press is reporting that
Jason Grilli is apparently going to make the team and that Leyland mentioned 5 possibilities for the final spot on the staff:
Leyland said up to five candidates remain for the seventh and final bullpen spot. He provided names, too: right-handers Chad Durbin and Zach Miner, and left-handers Edward Campusano and Bobby Seay. He added that Yorman Bazardo, the right-hander acquired last month from the Seattle Mariners, "could be involved."
