Long-term deal for Grandy

The Tigers have signed Curtis Granderson to a 5 year contract with a club option for a 6th year. The Tigers now control Granderson, who would have been eligible for free agency after the 2011 season, though 2013 (the option year). The total contract value of the 5 guaranteed years is 30.25 million which sounds like somewhat of a hometown discount to me.

Granderson had an outstanding season in 2007 batting .302/.361/.552 and finishing in the top 10 in MVP voting. He is perhaps best known nationally for being one of only 4 players in baseball history to achieve the quad twenty: 20 homers, 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 stolen bases. He was also the Tigers best base runner and arguably the league's best defensive center fielder.

In addition to his on field accomplishments, he has had a big impact on the Detroit community and was was one of the finalists for the Roberto Clemente Award selected annually by MLB to a player for his character and charitable contributions. He has also made himself very popular among fans across the country with his online blog and with his appearances as an analyst for ESPN and TBS during the post-season.
