Mark Fidrych Book Contest

http://www.amazon.com/The-Bird-Life-Legacy-Fidrych/dp/1250004926#reader_1250004926

Last year, I wrote a review of the Mark Fidrych biography written by Doug Wilson: "The Bird: The Life and Legacy of Mark Fidrych".  I still highly recommend this book.  It is a great read for all Tigers fans whether you remember seeing him pitch or not.

I happen to have an extra copy of the book, so I have decided to give it away in a simple prediction contest.  Here is the question:

Which Tiger will get the first home run of the 2014 regular season.  Give the game, the inning and number of runners on base.

The tie breaker question is:

Which Tiger will get the first stolen base of the 2014 regular season.  Give the game and the inning.

The winner gets a free copy of the book.  Please put your predictions in the comments section.  You have until 1:00 PM EST on Monday, March 31 to submit a guess.  I will announce the winner once he/she is determined and we'll arrange to get the book sent.  The person who won last year's Mark Fidrych book contest is not eligible, but he is free to guess.

    1. And yeah I will throw out a guess. I'm going to pick Austin Jackson, the 1st Inning of the 1st game with 0 people on base, and for Tiebreaker, I pick Austin Jackson in the 1st game and 9th inning.

  2. Alex Avila, 5th inning of opener, solo shot. Tiebreaker: Jackson, 2nd inning of opener. Thanks for the contest!

  3. Great read. I really enjoyed it. I was just a year or two too young to go nuts over the Bird (I went mad for the game in about '78), so much of this was new to me. What a genuinely fun guy he was. Any serious Tiger fan who doesn't win it should buy a copy.

    1. Yeah it's pretty good, I got the Beyond Batting Average book featured here on this site and that's a great pickup and for a low price too.

  4. First home run: Miggy, first inning, first game, nobody on. First stolen base: Kinsler, third inning, first game. I not only saw the Bird pitch live several times, I was at the game when he threw out his arm in '77; leaving the field grimacing in pain. Worst thing I ever saw at a ballgame. If memory serves, a nonentity named Jim Crawford came in for him and pitched a shutout the rest of the way. I was also at the pine tar game at Yankee Stadium.

  5. I found the game: where the Bird got hurt:

Sure enough, Fidrych gave up an unearned run in the first (Ron Leflore error and sac fly) and Crawford shut down the mighty Blue Jays for 8 2/3. The left side of the Tigers' infield was Mankowski and Veryzer. Gonzalez is looking better all the time!

    1. Cool, thanks for helping us to have a glimpse of the experience of such an interesting game. I wasn't born yet so I didn't get a chance to appreciate that game for what it was worth. :)
