The 2007 Detroit Tigers top 10 prospect list is up at Top Prospect Alert. All prospect lists need to be taken with a grain of salt but Top Prospect Alert has been doing good work in this area for a long time. They usually get their rankings out before Baseball America and John Sickels and I often search through their lists to find players for my fantasy keeper league drafts. This year's list was compiled by J.P. Schwartz:

The biggest surprise on his list is Jonah Nickerson who was a 7th round pick out of Oregon State University in this year's draft. The 21 year old right-handed pitcher had a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings for short season Oneonta this year. He had a 2.24 ERA in 136.2 innings pitched for Oregon St.
Two notable omissions are Jeff Larish and Gorkys Hernandez. Larish, a first baseman who recently turned 24 years old, batted .262/.385/.473 for high A Lakeland of the Florida State League. Hernandez is a 19 year old outfielder who batted .327/.356/.463 in the rookie level Gulf Coast League this year. Hernandez was recently ranked the #3 prospect in the Gulf Coast League by Baseball America

I have no idea why everyone ignores Chis Carlson (2006 29th round pick) as a top Tiger prospect. This guy does nothing but put up awesome numbers on offense both in college and his first years with the Tigers organization at Gulf Coast.
ReplyDeleteI admit he was a bit old for the Gulf Coast league. It will be interesting to see how he fares vs Ryan Strieby (2006 4th round pick) in 2007 and after.
Both are 1st basemen and Strieby debuted at Oneonta in 2006, with medicore numbers. Strieby is about 1 1/2 years younger than Carlson.
Mike, he is probably unnoticed because of his age/level and the fact that he was picked in the 29th round. I can't say I know much about him other than his stats. If he hits well as he moves uo the ladder, he'll surely get more attention.
