Rogers, Rodriguez Win Gold Gloves

Kenny Rogers and Ivan Rodriguez received Gold Glove awards today. Although Gold Glove awards tend to be based on reputation rather than actual current year performance, I feel that Rogers and Rodriguez were deserving winners. I'll have more to say about this as the Fielding Bible and other sabermetric fielding stats come out during the course of the off-season.

There is actually already one sabermetric fielding stat out there today. Thanks to Mack Avenue Kurt for pointing me towards Chris Dial's article at Baseball Think Factory. Dial uses Zone Rating as the basis of his new fielding rating. I haven't had time to figure out for myself how much I like his method yet but he has done good work in the past. He are his winners:

c. Ivan Rodriguez
1B. Chris Shelton
2B. Aaron Hill
3B. Brandon Inge
SS. Juan Uribe
LF. Emil Brown
CF. Corey Patterson
RF. Alex Rios

There are 3 Tigers on that list and Placido Polanco (#2) and Curtis Granderson (tied for #3) also rank high. The Tigers had the highest Defensive Efficiency Rating in the league this year so you'll probably see them rank high on most of the fielding statistics.
