Father and Son Watch Tigers Beat Cardinals

It was a big night for the Panas family tonight. My father has been a huge Cardinal fan for most of his life which includes the 1934 World Series betweem the Tigers and Cardinals. As you've probably figured out by now, I have been an equally big Tiger fan for most of my life. For the first time since the 1968 World Series when I was 6 years old, my father and I were able to watch a Tigers/Cardinals game on television in an interleague match-up. I got the better of the father/son rivalry tonight as the Tigers outslugged the Cardinals 10-6 before a sell out crowd at Comerica Park.

The game was billed as a pitching duel between Justin Verlander and Chris Carpenter but it did not turn out that way. As has been the case for most of June, Verlander was not at his best tonight. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings of work before yielding to Fernando Rodney in the 7th. The table below shows how Verlander has struggled this month compared to April and May:

Table: Monthly Splits for Justin Verlander

His ERA has increased from 2.55 in April and May to 5.45 in June. It's been pretty obvious to any attentive observer that Verlander's control has not been as sharp this month and the walk rates per 9 innings (2.15 in April and May versus 4.71 in June) illustrate the problem clearly. His hit and home run rates have also increased this month. Hopefully, these growing pains are only temporary and he'll get back on track in the near future.

The good news was that Chris Carpenter was worse than Verlander as he gave up 7 runs on 9 hits in 7 innings. The Tigers had several hitting heroes:

  • Curtis Granderson – a leadoff home run in the first (his 11th of the year), a double and 2 RBI.
  • Magglio Ordonez – two singles and 2 RBI.
  • Marcus Thames – a double, a single and an RBI.
  • Brandon Inge – a team leading 16th home run, a single and 3 RBI.

Not surprisingly, the big hitter for the Cardinals was Albert Pujols who went 4 for 4 including his Major League leading 26th home run in the 9th inning off Todd Jones. Since Pujols is a big favorite of both father and son, his big night was something we both could enjoy even if only one of us was happy with the final result.

  4. I met this guy that said he was his dad too. It was in Monroe, the guy was probably 70 and drove a white Cadillac. He said his name was Don. He wouldn't show me an ID though. I knew he was lying.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Ummm.... That Don guy was in my aunts work saying he was Brandon Inges father last week. She owns a hair salon and said his name was Don Inge, this is kind of freaky

  6. I just met the imposter. I was working and he came in and said his son is the third baseman for the detroit tigers. he told me he would get tickets for me and parking tickets to let me park with the tigers players. he also owns a cadallac.

  7. The Brandon Inge father imposter strikes again! We're trying to figure out WHY this guy is going around telling these stories, any ideas?

He came into our lighting showroom this afternoon claiming that his son was building a house in West Bloomfield and that he would need lights. He stayed for about a half hour telling us stories about his kids and his career as a fighter pilot. He even told us that Brandon got divorced and remarried Chely Wright at the RenCen!

This guy must be pretty crazy...

    ReplyDelete
  8. The same guy comes into my work all the time in Trenton. He is constantly telling other customers that his son is Brandon Inge and he'll get them tickets.
His new story is that he's moving down to Florida for spring training.
Its kind of sad. He's just lonely so we play along. Its weird that he's all over the place

  9. Get this - - the guy that claims to be Brandon Inge's dad also claims to be a retired Air Force pilot. He also claims to have been the pilot that flew the mission to bomb Khadafi's house in Libya back in the 1980's. He was also a pilot in the Blue Angels (even though the Blue Angels is a Navy pilot flight squadron). He claims that Brandon bought him a 6 bedroom house out on Grosse Ile and Justin Verlander and Chris Shelton live there with him during the off-season.

I had this interesting chat with this fella this week at the WalMart in Monroe!

  10. hahaha oh my god. i just randomly got on google to see what Inge's dads name was. My mom called me today and said she met a guy at Home Depot in Woodhaven who was Inge's dad, and that he was going to Lakeland tomorrow. i find this site, and now I can't stop laughing my ass off.

  11. We got duped also, but what a hoot it was! Funny thing is Dona's still waiting for her tickets. Well the afternoon sure turned out interesting!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. We're in Grosse Ile, he pulled a fast one on us. Why does he do this? He stayed almost 2 hours, told stories you wouldn't believe, dancing with Shania Twain and the whole ten yards. We're ass holes, we may never this one down.

  13. I was in Meijers, Woodhaven and was stopped by a nice old man claiming to be Brandon Inge's father. I spent 30 minutes listening to his stories about his home on Grosse Ile, war career and Brandon's new country signing wife. He stopped me because I was wearing a Tiger jacket and hat, this is the last time I wear my Tiger jacket and cap. That's 30 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

  14. Today I met this man too! I was so giddy when he told me that he was Brandon Inge's dad. He said his name was Dwight, drove a white cadillac, would get me tickets and parking passes to park with the Tigers. He also told me that his daughter was the olympic breast stroke winner in the Olympics in Greece last year and is dating Chad Henne from U of M and that we would also be sitting with him at the game. He told us to get to the game early because Brandon would come and talk to us befor the game and give us autographed baseballs. Any other suckers out there???

  15. I met this man too! OMG he said his dad bombed Khadofi's house or however you spell it but said his daughter was in olympics last year and was dating chad henne??? i didn't beileve it but i went along because he was kinda nice but ya and he said at brandons wedding, 1600 people came and he danced with shania twayne 4 times, and faith hill once.... so kinda weird..peace:)

  17. Well, the "Dwight" imposter made me smile today. He was trying to find a little boy for his son Brandon Inge to give tickets in New Boston (Southwest of Metro Airport). He could not find the address, although I thought he was not telling truth, I tried to help him locate the address on the GPS in my car.

All it cost me was time and it was kind of entertaining to put a smile on a old man's face.

My tickets and parking pass should arrive any day now. NOT!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Too Funny! Myself and a bunch of my fellow co-workers were duped by the famous Dwight Inge just a few hours ago while at work.

He claimed he was looking for a mother of a boy who had leukemia that was a huge fan of Brandon's. He said his son told him that she worked for our company, but SURPRISE! No such person. We got the whole tickets, parking pass promise and everything!! I don't know if we'll ever live this one down! What a nut!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh man,
When Brandon Inge's father came in to my work today it was a blast from the past!! He had earlier accosted my kids at Big Apple Bagel in Woodhaven with all the stories that everyone here has spoken about! We knew he was lying when he said his daughter swam breaststroke in the Olympics....he didn't know that both my daughter and myself are swimmers and we watch competitive swim! THEN about a year later we were surprised by him again! My daughter had on an I LOVE LA t-shirt and he started telling us why he didn't like California and that his son, Brandon Inge just married a country singer and all the stars he danced with and what the house is like that they all live in!! I know from google that Brandon's wife works at UofM hospital in Ann Arbor....sheesh, I wonder if Brandon knows about this and what his thoughts are....the poor man can't be in his right mind....can he???????

  20. Don/Dwight Inge imposter strikes again!

The old man came out to see a high school girls' soccer game in Newport (just north of Monroe) only to promise people tickets, parking passes, the whole deal! Same old stories of war veteran, dancing with country singers, Chad Henne, olympian daughter. Classic!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Brandon Inge's father strikes again. I work for hallmark in the walmart in Monroe. He was one aisle over talking to some people (very loudly) and offering them tickets and parking passes. I hope they don't wait too long. I actually got a pic. of him on my cell phone.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Last year, while i was at a Tim Horton's in Monroe, that same old man who claimed that he was Brandon Inge's dad offered me four tickets and a parking pass. It was during the morning rush, so everyone else in line was busy shaking his hand and talking about his late-game heroics the day before (he apparently won the game in the 9th). Yes, you guessed it, I didn't get my tickets either. It would have been nice to meet Chad Henne though.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I knew it! I too came online to see if Brandon Inge's "father" was really who he said he was! I got the story in a tire store, where he took his white cadillac that Brandon bought him (his wife got a Hummer, Brandon's sister got a Grand Prix!), in Woodhaven, he wouldn't leave us alone, he was following us around. His daughter is Michelle the Olympian, going out with Chad Henne, he bought his airplane from John Travolta down in FL...what is with this guy? What a detailed story to remember! He got another guys address for Tigers tickets. That's why I say, never give out your address to strangers in tire stores!

    ReplyDelete
  24. oh yeah, and he also told us about dancing with Shania Twain at Brandon's re-marraige at the RenCen...and Michelle, Brandon's sister works at UM hospital- I was going to look that up too since he seemed to come up with that after I told him I worked at UM. What a weirdo! I'd be very creeped out if I was Brandon Inge.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I posted the top two posts...what's weird is that I just talked to my Mom, she was downtown for jury duty, and SHE saw his "dad" on a break! He was telling the people outside about his "son". She said she got creeped out and went back inside real quick....

    ReplyDelete
  26. I must have been in the group with your mom because I was serving jury duty today(downtown Detroit)and a man claiming to be Inge's dad joined in our conversation. He told me all the Brandon and war stories, I told him he should write a book. He said he had! I mentioned that I knew Pat Sheridan, who used to be a Tiger and he told me he was dead. I contacted a high school buddy who confirmed that he is alive and well. After thinking that this guy could be a liar I found this site. He got me good too. I was a believer. I sure hope he doesn't tell anybody else that one of their dear friends has died.

  27. same thing happened to me in the check out line at Meijer's in Woodhaven. Same story and everything. I have 1 more lie to add, he told me his father in law was a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns back in the 30's and 40's.

    FAKE - FAKE

  28. He got me too. He was in Lasalle MI at Midway Party Store off of S. Dixie Hwy. He told me nearly everything that has been mentioned here. We talked for about 15 min. or so while I was delivering beer. He said he had flew the misson and dropped the bomb on Kadaffi, but he killed Kadaffi's daughter instead and that he has always felt bad for that. He said he was going to get my family ten tickets to a Tiger game and that we would get to meet Brandon. He asked for my name and address and I gave it to him. The sad thing is is that I told my family including my little girls who love him and my Nephew that is absolutely crazy about Brandon Inge. He has always told me that, so the first person I called was my brother who told him. I have checked the mail for everyday for the past week or so, only to find out today on the WRIF that this guy is crazy. Don't know how to explain this to my little Nephew, who has asked me several times if I had received the tickets yet.

  29. Brandon's father's name is Dwight. He is in his mid-fifties (55-56) and is about 6'3" tall...he is from Virginia and so far as I know, stills lives in a small town in Virginia. I went to high school with him and he is a good guy who would never pull any of these stunts whether Brandon was a star for the Tigers or not.

about a week ago we recieved a visit from the infamous Dwight Inge. I have a couple other little fun facts about him. He told us he served in the Air force for 34 years and just retired 4 years ago. Right after that he told us that he served in 4 wars including Korea. I am not a math major or anything but i believe that war was back in the 50s, so it was a little more than 38 years ago. Thank God at that point i was able to filter his b.s. and started walking away. Unfortunately several other of my co-workers were sucked in by his tales, and we learned that he bought a 16 passenger jet airplane from Jon Travolta himself down in Florida. Well thats all from me i have to get back to work..........

I posted the blog about my mom being at jury duty, and the ones above it. My dad was telling me about the WRIF story a couple weeks ago, but then that they had Brandon Inge last week on the radio. He said that MLB had investigated this guy a couple years ago and deemed that he is harmless. At least he knows about it so hopefully he has good security.

My family and I were visited my father in law's grave at Michigan Memorial Cemetary on May 1, 2007 and this guy came up to us and told us he was Branon Inge's father. He just drove up and started talking. He also told us that he was visiting his wife who was murdered 12 years ago in Grosse Isle. He was about 70 years old and driving a white Cadillac. Supposedly, Fox 2 in Detroit is having a special Hall Of Shame report on this guy tonight on the 10 pm news.

I had my encounter with Mr. Inge a few months ago. I also watched the news last night...yep same guy! I feel bad for him though, his family apparently knows he does this and has tried to ask him to stop. He refuses. He needs to get some help. I also feel badly for the people he duped especaially little kids. He may seem harmless, but it is a little creepy. Wonder if the story has gotten to the real Mr. Inge and what he thinks about it.

He struck a converation with my dad and after about a half and hour of talking, he said he would give us tiger tickets and have us meet the tigers. Of course it never happened, and me and my dad just passed him off as some crazy dude. BUT we went back to bob evans bout a month later, and he was there AGAIN. He wouldnt dare come near us though...

  38. just wanted to let everyone know that Iggy's Pizza in woodhaven, is also getting these visits from this older man, claiming to be the father of Justin Verlander, drives a white caddy, talks about being a fighter pilot, has 4 kids, 3 boys and a daughter, michelle? which was in the olympics and won the breast stroke, bought a jet from john travolta, one son is a business man and the other is a doctor. he says justin bought him a house in grosse ile, seems to be a very nice man that loves Iggys pizza instead of little ceaser's hahahaha, or maybe just the conversation, comes in at least once a week and orders a small pepperoni pizza.

  39. My sister had an encounter with the imposter dad at a Wyandotte park. Same story. So when i was at work in monore and some old guy came in claimed to be Justin Verlanders dad, I was instantly skeptical. Me and one of my co-workers asked him to prove who he was by showing us his id. He wouldn't and got mad that we didn't believe him and stormed off. Funny how the guy changed his story up a little. New player, still creepy.

  40. I met him just before opening day in Wyandotte. In addtion to the married to the country singer, sister in the Olympics, war hero, owns a giant plane stories, he mentioned that Justin Verlander and Chris Shelton lived with him last summer. Justin was a good kid who helped around the house while Chris Shelton was very lazy and watched too much TV!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Now it really gets WIERD. He came into the Woodhaven Home Depot and set up a measuring service for all new windows in a new home that his son (Justin Verlander)is building for him on Grosse Ile. He gave an address that is non-existant and a phone number with a New York City area code that of course is non-existant. If you think that was WIERD, hold on. He actually paid $30.00 cash for the above service and left. "WOW"

  42. I just ran into him at the LaSalle Bank ATM in Flat Rock. Said he was in the Air Force for 33 years, retired a full bird, and was Justin Verlander's dad and I think he said his name was Dwight Verlander. He looks to be 75-85 and might top out at 5'5" or so.

  43. LOL!! I met Justin Verlander's dad, at a Denist office in Monroe, he said his Name is Dwight, and that he just renegociated his contract for him, 4 yrs 42 million,
I fell for it, he was offering everyone tickets at the office, as well as me who was a paitent there, said he would bring Justin to my Salon to get his haircut! he also said his daughter Michelle just graduated from the U of M with a medical degree, and also won A olimpic gold medal... This is NUTS!!

Today I was at the Southgate city hall and a man came in that looks just like the guy that you profiled in your hall of shame that claims he is Brandon Inge's father. This time he was claiming he was Justin Verlander's father, he lived on East River in Grosse Ile, and that his son wanted to open a sporting goods store in Southgate. He actually purchased a zoning map for $1.50, and he had to tell everyone around him that he was his father. He was telling everyone that he could get them suite tickets and to see him before a game or something.

Pretty sad that we kind of believed him...we were a bit skeptical when he wouldn't show us I.D. but let him talk anyway..until a couple called him out on it on the way out! He is moving south. Today in Erie Michigan at my daughters garage sale. Told me his wife hit big at Greektown last night, $25000, and that his son, Justin Verlander, was there, then had to fly back to Cleveland to finish the series with the Indians. Also said his daughter graduated from med school at UM and was engaged to Chad Henne, wedding next month and he had to pay for it. I told him we had season tickets to UM and he said he did also. I was suspicious before, but when I asked him what section his seats were in, he hesitated. That's when I knew he was a phony. Any season ticket holder can tell you immediately what section they are in, the row, seat numbers and yard line! He offered to send me Tiger tickets as well with a parking pass. Also said he was retired AF pilot. He drives a cream Cadillac. What a piece of work. Hope he is having fun!!!

  57. Yes Dwight Verlander is an old man who seems to like to visit garge sales and will tell you all about his "family" and time in the service. If you ever get to meet him have fun with it. He was just in woodhaven today at my sisters garage sale. My dad even recorded some of his stories on a voice recorder he really had him going..haha God bless him.

  58. My husband and I met Justin Verlanders father today at a garage sale in New Boston on Middlebelt Road. We got the latest version of the story with his 19 year old son having been killed in Iraq. When he got to the part about buying the jet off of John Travolta we knew we were hearing an old mans fantasy. It was interesting when he was sharing the information about Justin being his son to the owners of the home where the garage sale was held because I shared with him that we had just been to a Tigers game and that I had a picture of Justin in our car and he asked that I go and get it. I showed him the ticket with Justins picture on it and of course he said "yep that's my son Justin". He offered us tickets to a game along with the tickets for parking with the Tigers players and also to meet Justin at 5:00 before the game we would attend. He's a harmless old man having fun with fans like us. We enjoyed his enthusiasm.

  59. He's back--this time at Elizabeth Park in Trenton. He was looking for the "Perkins" family whose son is suffering from leukemia. He gave me the whole, " I have signed baseballs, jerseys,". I humored him and then he drove off. He seems to like downriver and Monroe locations. Funny and sad all at the same time.

  60. Today I talked to a guy named Dwight say's he Jason Verlander's Dad. He was about 70 years old driving a White Cadillac. He claims his son Jason bought him and his Wife a house on Grosse Ile and two new Cadillacs. Said Jason lives in West Bloomfield and lives next door to Glenn Frey of the Eagles. Told me he "knows Glenn personally" and Glenn has been to at least 60 Tiger Games courtesy of Jason Verlander. Also said he was a Fighter Pilot in the Air Force and served 30 years. Said he was in Korean, Vietnam, Panama and Blew-up Khadafi's House killing Khadafi's Daughter.

The cashiers were clearly on to him and gave each other knowing glances. He still has the white Caddy.

  65. Well today we were had. A older man came to our OB/GYN office in Monroe and wanted to make a appointment for his daughter. I asked what she was coming in for he said she was pregnant. He went on to tell us that he was Justin Verlander's Dad and went on and told stories of signging autographs and how much Justin made, his daughter was doing her intership at UofM and a he said when he came in with his daughter that he would bring us about 12 tickets for a game. We found out later that he had been to another OB/GYn office at the end of March and made an appointment too and promised them tickets as well. I did get a phone number from him and I called it and spoke to a man who just kinda chuckled when I said I was calling to verify an appointment. I think he gets a lot of phone calls. This older man wears a US POLO Association Jacket in Khaki color. He is a HOAX!!!

  66. We had the pleasure of meeting this man as well at our Podiatry office yesterday!! He is quite a character!! Sort of feel sorry for him!! He definitely has a vivid imagination!! It was interesting to read the other blogs about his stories... they seem rather consistant except with Tiger player is his child and what profession his daughter is currently doing!! But we heard about the fighter pilot stories, the bombing and the jet from John Travolta too... amazing!! Not holding out breathe for the Tiger Tickets needless to say LOL!! Whatever you do though.... DON'T let his phone number get out to the public... heehee... his wife tells off 20-25 people a day who call to harrass them LOL!!

  67. My family and I were at Michigan Memorial this past Sunday, which also happened to be Easter and we were there because it was my brothers birthday, whom had passed away three years ago. I will also mention that he was an HUGE fan of baseball his whole life...anyways while we were there "Dwight" happened to walk up to us after seeing my son with a Tigers shirt and hat on. He coincidentally did work for the Tigers recently and was in Lakeland for the tigers spring training. He told us that he was Dwight Verlander, father to Justin Verlander, and proceeded to tell us a big story about his "son" and even told us that he was going to be having Easter dinner with 7 of the tigers that day. He asked if we would like to have tickets to the next game that his son pitched at and we were all excited, and gave him our addresses and how many tickets we needed. After he left my sister who was also there said that she had seen him on TV and that he was a fake. Not believing this to be true, and still believing that he was who he said he was, I looked up his name and found this site, along with the tv coverage from the hall of shame. WOW, this is hilarious!!! Made me laugh alot!! All I can say is I think that my brother had something to do with all this...he would have thought this was super funny shit...so I think that man was there for a reason and knowing what a jokester my brother was, I think we made his day in heaven Sunday! Anyways, c'mon people, he's just a sweet little man that apparently wanted to have a famous son, and he is giving alot of people laughs, so leave him alone and let him be whoever it is he wants to be.
    Signed,

  68. Too funny, "Dwight Verlander" struck again last weekend in Trenton. By the time he said he was still flying with the Blue Angels, I knew for sure he was lying. BTW he bought a 'Scrapbooking for Divas' book for $2.00!

  69. we met this guy yesterday in the Southgate Olive Garden. He said he was Justin Verlander's dad and could get us tickets for a tiger game. I smelled a rat when he said Justin had won three games already this year when his record is really 0-2. I can't wait to get my free tickets. HA HA HA.

So this guy is at Olive Garden Friday, 6/5/09, and he tells us he is Justin Verlander's dad. He told us his name was Dwight. Then he said his daughter, Michelle Verlander, won a gold medal at some Olympics a few years ago, and is going to marry Chad Henne (was quarterback at U of M) this summer, and that Justin is getting married in September. Oh, and he's leaving next week with his wife for a month long trip to Austraila where he is staying with the lead singer for the Bee Gee's because he's close personal friend of his. And then he said his 19 year old son passed a few months ago because he jumped on a grenade and saved 26 other soldiers and General Norman Schwartzkoff was at his son's funeral. All this conversation, and it was all before he was heading to the Tiger's game tonight because his son was pitching tonight. Yep we heard all this at Southgate Olive Garden. We knew he was full of it from the beginning, but let him ramble on. I took a picture of him and added it to my facebook for everyone to see this guy.

We just had a visit from "Dwight Verlander" at our Garage Sale in Brownstown today! All the same stories, Justin bought him a home on Grosse Isle, they have a 32ft yacht there, Daughter won a Gold medal, His other son died in Iraq,Threw himself on a grenade and saved 22 other soldiers, and they were awarded the congressional medal of honor from Retired General Norman Schwarzkopf at the funeral. Said Justin was getting married soon and the reception was to be at the Ren Cen. He kept us amused for 20 minutes or so and then went on his way

Met "Dwight Verlander" at our yard sales yesterday in Huron Township. Still driving the white Cadillac. The story he gave included everything you have all related, but he has added a story that he owns several classic cars worth millions. I felt sorry for him and gave him a racing jacket to "give to Justin". So if you see an old man wearing a Coca-Cola branded Nascar jacket, beware!

They were going to stay with one of the guys that were in the Beegees. He said Justins soon to be wife was a model at Macy's and was going to quit her job. Said he needed appt for his daughter that was having a problem. He has been in the office about 2-3 times and I think he just forgot he had been here before with a similar story about this and the flight stories too!!

  78. I met this clown today at the Quizno's on Telegraph in Monroe! I was standing in line and the old dude next to me said he liked my Tigers hat and that his son pitched for them. Of course it was Justin Verlander! The guy looked old enough to be JV's grandpa! I reminded the old fart the his "son" was 15 minutes away from taking the mound in the first game of todays doubleheader! Of course I wasn't telling him anything he didn't already know. He was pretty confident he would make it from Monroe to Detroit in 15 minutes! After he told the same story to a couple other non-believers I watched him walkout and get into a white Caddy! I had no idea this guy has been doing this for years, WEIRD!

  79. well, well...this old Verlander man still isn't done. He came up to me and my mother today at michigan memorial of all places as we're visiting my grandpa for his birthday. poor old guy really. at first it ticked me off that he had to meet up with us at a cemetary, but I guess there werent any garage sales. but then i just felt bad for him after reading all these for he was probably visiting his wife or something while he was there, and just wanted to talk, who knows...kinda threw a flag up for me when I realized he said his son just bought him that caddy...I said to myself a 9+ million dollar pro star can afford more than an old run-of-the-mill caddy...anyways same old stories about being an airforce blue angel. HA! really now? anyone see anything wrong with that last statement?

  82. We met the guy at the POB at Mercy Memorial Hospital. He told us he was an orthopedic surgeon who just did a ladies knee replacement. He told us everything about being Verlander's dad and had a house on Grosse Ile that his son bought. Also the plane that his son bought him from John Travolta. His daughter won a gold medal in the olympics for swimming, and he got a visit from the military police a few weeks ago saying his other son was killed in Iraq. He told us he was in the Blue Angels show a few weeks back flying a plane for them. He left our office saying he had to go check on his patient. He is a nut case!

  84. Another sighting in Monroe!
We received about 45 minutes of stories from "Dwight Verlander" he was in our area giving away signed ball and jersey from Justin to a Leukemia Patient. Myself and my friends are AVON reps and we were having a great day, doing what we do when he came by and really enthralled us with his stories of fame and fortune, the trip to barry Gibbs house coming up. He ordered some items from one of the girls and when she called to set up delivery to his mansion on Grosse Isle, she received the bad news. Then I looked it up and found this blog. I find it amusing. I really can't imagine what would posses someone to go about doing this for so long, however he was a harmless old man with nothing to do in his life. (I'm assuming). Although it can be hurtful to the kids to think they may be getting tickets and such, really now. I would think he could get in some sort of trouble, the strange thing is his stories rolled off of his tongue as if they were versed so many times. I can see and did get caught up in the moment. Everyone wants to have a little excitement in their lives now and then. We had ours that day. Thanks to Mr Dwight Verlander or whoever he is.

  85. Dwight Verlander Sighting -

Met Dwight Verlander at the Southgate Olive Garden this afternoon. He talked away about how his son "Justin" is pitching against Minnesota tonight and his wife - of 50 years, last month - was there at the game. "Justin" is up for the Cy Young award also and he really thinks he will win.

He also mentioned his daughter graduating U of M with a Medical degree and how she's marrying Chad Henne next month...and HE has to pay for the wedding. He talked of how he was a fighter pilot and fought in 4 wars - Korea, Vietnam, Lybia, and somewhere else I don't recall and that he still flies with the Blue Angels. His 19 yr old son was killed in Iraq just 4 months ago after he jumped on a grenade saving the lives of 28 soldiers.

We all thought he was a bit old for having such young children, but we let him tell his stories. He was a nice, harmless old fella. I kind of feel sorry for him. He must not have anything else to do but tell these entertaining stories to anyone who will listen. He must be pretty lonely.

  86. A bit bored, I decided to Google the name of an interesting man whom came into my antique shop. He claimed to have a Rembrant to sell and was trying to do so because he was getting a divorce. When I told him we don't buy but I could take his name and number, he started in on the stories. "Dwight Verlander" went on about his son pitching for the Tigers and, as I wasn't biting because I honestly couldn't have cared less, he mentioned it quite a few times trying to get me to take the bait and, I assume, lay a similar story as shown in these posts. I have a shop in Monroe MI and told him, as I tell everyone else, that I wouldn't give his number out and if there was any interest it would be me calling. He said "OH, PLEASE don't give out the number because I have people calling CONSTANTLY about my son." I kept laughing him off and away he went in his white Cadillac. I'm gonna look the number up as I don't recognise the area code as being local. Interesting I found this blogspot, haha. Cheers!

For over a year I've been getting calls from Doctor's offices, salon's, etc. to confirm appointments of all sorts either for Dwight Verlander or for his daugher Michelle. All from Michigan. This is VERY VERY VERY annoying and frustrating. This CRAZY INSANE man is going around making fake appointments and I have to deal with this. Is there anyway we could catch him? He is commiting fraud and should be arrested - this is absolutely insane! I decided to google him today (after getting 3 calls in one day) and found this blog. If anyone has any idea how to potentially catch him, I'd really appreciate your ideas. What city in Michigan his he doing these things from - maybe I'll call the local police!

Was excited at first, but just had to wonder why a Detroit Tiger's pitcher who just signed a muti- million dollar contract would want sub sandwichs at his wedding???? By the way....it was going to be held at the Ren Cen. The number "Mr. Verlander" left is to a financial planning firm located in Manhattan. Too bad he is just a crazy old man, we sure could have used the revenue!!!!!

He told us we would get tickets plus a parking pass and we would meet Justin before the game. We all had a good laugh that was needed! Hope he keeps putting smiles on tiger fans faces for a long while to come!

  97. Feb. 12 - Another Dwight Verlander appearance. Dwight came into our clinic in Brownstown(was here last year too) to make an appointment for his daughter Michelle. He claimed she had just graduated U of M's med school program and getting ready to start her internship. He also told us how she was an olympic gold medalist in the 100m breast stroke. When I asked for a phone number he said this goes no further.... It was a number to a financial planning office in New York. Dwight was excited that spring training was just around the corner for Justin, and about his upcoming nuptials. He was excited for Justin signing his new 5 year,$80 million contract. He asked how many tickets we needed to go to the games and asked if we could be there at 6pm on the nights that Justin was pitching - that way Justin would sign autographs for us. He was also very proud how much Justin does for kids and said he had just written a check for $200,000 to Marlo Thomas' St. Jude's foundation... We were also informed this time of another son who was only 19 years old and just died in combat in the middle east. He claims he jumped on a mine and saved 28 men. He received the congressional medal of honor from Swartzkoff himself... He was buried at Selfridge.... Aww, he was a sweet man though... I looked up Justin Verlanders dad online, and he does kind of resemble him.... I think he was driving an off-white truck.

  98. Here's another for your reading enjoyment! This morning my girlfriend and I were having breakfast at Rams Horn in Southgate. This crazy old bird was sitting and he started his antics. Our server warned us not to turn around or we would get caught up in a 30 minute conversation with him. While I was sitting there I began searching for Verlander's bio. Turns out his real father's name is Richard, his mother's name is Kathy and he was one brother Benjamin. (no sister named Michelle)

Being rather skeptical from the start, I didn't give him the opportunity to recite his rant. However, as he was getting ready to leave, he asked my girlfriend if her name was Marilynn! Evidently, Marilynn is someone he sits next to at all of Justin's games! He introduced himself as Dwight Verlander and said he was leaving for a flight to Lakeland at 1:45. It was almost 1 when we heard the story so that white cadillac must also have a warp speed to get him to the airport and through security to catch a flight in 45 minutes! But then again, who's going to give Verlander's dad a hard time! HAHA He's too much!

  99. Dwight Verlander is still at it. He came into a Tax office in Monroe twice to make an apointment and talk about his son. Same old story, he negotiated 80 million dollare deal for his son and told us that we wish we made that much. He was in a red/orangeish Jeep liverty. He said he would get us all tickets and how his son is in Florida for spring training. Then he walked to the offices all around, Im guessing to tell them the same story. I knew who he was so we acted like it wasnt a big deal, then he said "do you even know justin verlander" we responded yes and he said "well like i said im his dad" then we said you already said that and blew it off, but he kept on talking about his son.

  100. He was in our establishment last night and kept some patient patrons busy for half an hour before our death glares finally chased him out. He really makes me mad! He said he was taking the food he ordered to a 14-year-old girl with leukemia. I know he probably doesn't realize what he is doing, but he is really offensive with the stories he tells! I think I'll tell him next time he comes in that I'm out of snake oil and ask if he knows anyone who sells it!

He was registering for baby stuff for his daughter and he was telling stories about just losing a son in Iraq. Told us his son jumped on a bomb and saved 24 other people. Also told us he was a Blue Angel, had just met Brad Pitt and was going to Australia to spend a month with Barry Gib. Oh, and he and his wife had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniv. He was 70 or so, and about 5'3" tall. Guess I got "hit" too.

  106. I've never been duped like this before, but as of today---Sunday, March 21,2010---count me and my sister in!! A disheveled, half-shaven old guy dressed in dirty clothes came into the Joann Fabrics store in Taylor, MI while my sister and I were looking at items on the Clearance Table. He told us his wife had sent him there because she wanted some hand cream---he said that the two of them had just driven in from Lakeland where they'd been watching their son, Justin Verlander, play spring training games. He introduced himself as Dwight Verlander, but quite honestly, I don't think the father of our "$8-Million-Dollar-Man" would look like a plain old bum. This so-called Dwight Verlander was drooling, and filthy, and would not stop talking. He also mentioned his son who was killed in Military Action and got the Medal of Honor at age 19, he mentioned his daughter who is marrying Chad Henne this June (after having won the gold medal in swimming in the 2008 Olympics), and the fact that he (Dwight)was in the Blue Angels. In fact, he told us that he'd recently met Brad Pitt, who was filming a movie in Ann Arbor, and that he let Brad sit in his fighter plane for 45 minutes. The whole encounter seemed a little too good to be true, especially just in the appearance of this guy, so I think that my sister and I have met the same Phony Dwight Verlander as everyone else. Apparently, Downriver is his territory (Justin bought them a place on Grosse Ile so that Justin could park his boat there), so everyone in the Downriver Area--you might be next!!

I am a CPA in Taylor. "Dwight" came into my office saying Justin owned a supper club and was going to purchase Matthews Hargrave Chevrolet and wanted to incorporate all of the entities. I suggested he contact and attorney but he said he would bring Justin by one day with his tax returns so we could talk about it. I was quite busy yet polite and told him to come back again....maybe he will and can relate the Blue Angels story. He was very polite and personable but obviously not firing on all eight cylinders. Not an unpleasant encounter at all...rather humorous.

After the conversation I shook his hand and said thank you for serving our country. The little guy obviously has some issues but imo means no harm.

Yup, I got duped at KFC in Monroe today. I believe the man! then I googled Verlander's dad. I sat there for almost an hour listening to him thinking what a great guy and great family. He told me about his daughter, chad henne or henning (not sure his name) shes an olympian, he was on his way back from giving a girl with leukemia a jersey and ball.. He also talked about the blue angels and how he bombed whoever that was... Justin signed an $80 million contract and is getting married at the ren-cen in 2 weeks. Along with his daughter who is getting married in 2 months and how he has to pay for the wedding..
At least he is harmless.. I can't believe i believed him though! Just lonely i suppose. He was driving an orange dodge

The fist time I met this guy was in Gibraltar at a Gas Station in 03/07. Had the sane Car and told us he was off to spring training for his son. Saw a year later and realized this Guy lives down the street from me in Gibraltar. He tells me that his son has been writing movie scripts for the past 5 years. His son's previous work is on "Red Eye" and the new "Red Dawn" movie(Both Red movies) and has met Michael Bay on the set of "last House on the Left".Nothing on IMDB checks out and I wonder if he's move onto having a screenwriting son. Hasn't given me the Tiger(knows I'm not into sports) Dad talk but everything fits the M.O.. Does anybody have a picture so I can confirm this. All previous links are dead and cannot google up a picture.

Here's an old article stating that his name is Ralph Cruiseo. I have a picture of the back of him somewhere at home, but you can't see his face obviously.

My friend and I met him at the Walmart in Monroe about a month ago. He said it was he and his wife's anniversary, and asked me to read a card he had picked out for her. It was a nice card :-) Then he asked if we liked the Tigers, and said he was Justin Verlander's dad. We reacted appropriately but weren't sure if we should believe him. My friend called her dad to ask him and he told her that there was a guy who went around telling people he was Verlander's dad. Later, the guy found us again in the store and acted as if he'd never seen us before. He told us it was his daughter's birthday, and then told us again that he was Verlander's dad. We weren't sure what to think of this guy! My brother works at Buffalo Wild Wings in Monroe and said he's waited on "Verlander's dad" before as well.

Saw him again today at Monroe Walmart. He was in an orange Jeep Compass.

  124. A man about 5' 3" or 4" told me he was Justin verlanders father and that I would be receiving 10 free tiger tickets and sit right next to the tigers. He said "The other guests would be a few Red Wings and Glen frye of the Eagles because Glen frye is Justin's neighbor." Sure sounded too good to be true and it is a hoax. He did resemble Justin somewhat just a shorter person.

  125. "Dwight Verlander" came to our barn sale today! He didnt go to the game today cause he went to visit a 14 yr old girl w/leukemia. That man is crazy!! I think he drives a Jeep Compass now.

  126. "Mr. Verlander" came into our driving school in Southgate today. He wanted someone to teach his daughter how to drive. He said he can't because she's terrible, but she was an Olympic swimmer in the last summer Olympics and she just graduated from U of M Med School. Her name is Michelle. Said he and Justin were in Memphis at St. Jude's and Justin wrote a $200,000 check to Marlo Thomas for St. Jude's. Also said he and his wife just returned from a trip to Australia. Said Justin is getting married at the end of the season, 1700 people at the RenCen and glad he doesn't have to pay for it. Said his youngest son just died in Iraq and was 19. Said Justin built him a house on Grosse Ile and Justin lives in West Bloomfield next to Glenn Fry, lead singer of the Eagles.
I just listened to him, shook his hand when he left, then saw him go into the hair salon next to us. Kind of sad, nice man. My husband also heard the same stories at an oil change place in Brownstown, guy had a white Cadillac.
I thought I heard of a Verlander father imposter going around a long time ago, then came home and googled it and found this blog! Amazing, but sad too.

  127. So I met "Justin Verlander's Dad" today at Meijer:-) He stopped & asked me if I liked the Tigers, then continued to talk about how his son is flying he and his wife out to Australia for a month because he just signed a $80 million dollar contract. I'm pretty sure I got punk'd! But nonetheless, his enthusiasm was adorable. I don't think I've ever seen someone so proud of their son. Definitely brightened my day :D

  128. I MET THIS GUT TODAY TOO AT MY WORK. HE TOLD ME HIS SON PITCHED FOR THE TIGERS, AND ASKED ME IF I LIKE THEM. LOL THIS GUY IS LOONY

  129. My sister met the imposter at Monroe Wal Mart this morning. He was admiring how beautiful her kids are and went on to tell her that he was Verlander's dad, he also had a son who died in Iraq, and his daughter's graduating from U of M, blah, blah, blah...same stuff I guess. She didn't know any better and believed him. She asked him why he was in Monroe since he had said his son just bought him a house in Gross Ille. He said he and his wife just wanted to shop at the Wal Mart here, oh, and they're celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Seriously...he should be reported to MCOP's senior advocacy program. He obviously needs some mental help and they would get him to the right place.

  130. Latest Dwight sighting today at Chopstick Inn in Riverview. Having dinner with my sister and her family. He started telling the waitress his usual story and my sister immediately said "He's lying. He used to come into the drugstore when I worked there and tell the same stories." He is definitely harmless and lonely. It's too bad were aren't more interested in people just for who they are so they don't have to make up sensational stories to get attention.

Another Dwight Verlander's father sighting today at Jet's Pizza in Trenton. The same stories as above. He was pricing pizza's for Justin's bachelor party. Justin bought him a house in Grosse Ile.

I heard this story at Subway in Woodhaven a few months ago, so I didn't believe it.

  132. Dwight Verlander was at Our Lady of Hope Cemetary on Sunday, October 24th, 2010. We were visiting our baby and he came up and introduced himself as Justin Verlanders dad. He said that he was there because a family friend had lost her baby. He proceeded to tell us a story about how he got shot in the head in a parking garage in Detroit (and showed us the scar on his head)and how he was in the Air Force.

  133. This guy was just in my work!A vet hospital in Trenton. He reeked like cigarettes, i smoke, it does not normally bother me but this was overwhelming! This is not his first visit either, another receptionist told me about this guy coming in months ago claiming to be Justin Verlander's dad, telling everyone in our lobby his tall tales...crazy

  134. Dwight V came into my work today in New Boston talking about just coming back from visiting a young girl with cancer and giving her Tigers autographed items, Justin getting married last weekend and being on his honeymoon in Austrailia this week, etc. He is going next week to stay with his good friend Barry Gibb for a month. He bought a raffle ticket, wrote down his name as "D. Verlander" living on "Gros Isle", and giving a new york phone number. He's been in my work before saying he was Inge's father. He just seems like a loney man, but I didnt realize how loney until I saw how many stories people have about him.

    ReplyDelete
  135. He was in the Southgate Meijer store on Saturday talking to anyone who would listen. He says that Justin just signed a 5 year $80 million dollar deal.

  136. I was at the Meijer's store on Saturday. He stopped me and asked me to read a card that he had picked out for his 50th anniversary. It seems that from a post a year ago this should be 51st anniversary. You know men are always forgetting these things!! LOL He gave me the same story and my step-son told me about a gentleman telling the same tales. I just listened and wished him well!

  137. It's 10:25 am and Justin's "dad" just drove off in his burnt orange colored Dodge Caliber. I think he is making his "doctor rounds" again. He excited the ladies in our lobby just as we quickly escorted them into rooms. Now he is gone, off to spread more "Tiger Tales". Merry Christmas!

  138. Yup, i was dooped for the New Year. Sad thing is he told me was going to invest, being he is Verlander's father thought might be credible lead. Wasted an hour. Flight pilot etc etc. Told me he spend last 30 days with Bee Gees in Australia and couldn't attend Justin's wedding. Also, told me that his daughter was getting married to Miami Dolphins quarterback. Ugg...is it Monday?

  139. At RAMS HORN on 15 mile and dodge park at about 8:00pm, right next to the salvation army, thats Sterling Heights, this old man, he looks somewhat like Dr. Uncle BOB from jimmy kimmel live show, very lively person, started introducing himself as Justin Verlander's dad, also that Verlander had signed a $90 million deal with the tigers yesterday, came over and asked us about our 6 month old, and then asks my wife if she likes baseball, then reintroduces himself as verlander's dad, dont know what kind of car he was driving, but he did not seem legit for one and then he had his pants zipper all the way down while he was sitting at his table. COOKIE!

    ReplyDelete
  140. He just came into my work as he does about once every 2-3 weeks. This time he was looking for a little girl that has leukemia so he could give her 15 tigers' tickets, a signed baseball and jersey.

He introduced himself to everyone here as "Dwight Verlander". I'm wondering if he maybe just has the same last name and goes with it?!

I failed to notice what type of car he was driving though =(

  141. My girlfriend's and I were eating breakfast in a restaurant in Flat Rock and an older gentleman came up and started talking to us. He said he was Justin Verlander's "dad" and he was getting ready to head down to Lakeland, FL with Justin for spring training. Well, I hope he enjoys the warm weather...

  142. About 2 months ago my mother and I were eating at a restraunt in Trenton. When he came in, all estatic and proudly bragging about his son, Justin Verlander, we were led on as he took our addresses and promised to send us tickets. When we left my mother called her friend and found out that the imposter, Dwight Verlander as he calls himself (Real name Raph Crusieo) had done the same thing to her and her son. I felt bad for anyone who got led on, especially kids. I found this blog not too long after that. I was pretty sure I'd never see this man again though until last week when he came into George's Family Restraunt in Trenton and started his lies with my grandparents. Since I didn't want to be rude I lowered my eyes and hid my laughs until he focused his attention on me. "What you don't believe me?" he said. I laughed "No I don't because I know you go around doing this to everyone and it's really pathetic" He smiled at me, "Cute little girl isn't she?" He said and then flew out the door like a bat outta hell. A few people in the restraunt came up to me and said he had fooled them before too but I think I was the one who fooled him today.

  144. Guy was in Southgate Meijer's again-the day before the big Feb snow storm...Verlander's dad. And Verlander's sister's dad! Justin has a sister...oh, yeah, she won a medal in the Greek Olympics! Wow...

I started doing the Mat...50th anniversary..so you had Justin when you were how old? And he's a short guy! Justin got his height from his Mom...oh, I see!

But wait! His Grandfather is Lou "The Toe" Groza, former Cleveland Browns football player!

Wonder what this guys real deal is....

  145. I saw this guy at Dunkin Donuts in Southgate and he was talking with everybody so I took my food to go because I didn't feel like chatting and I thought he seemed kind of crazy.
And then the next day he came into Olive Garden and was saying that he is Justin Verlander's dad. He started talking to a few different tables of people including my own, telling about how he was going to give a young girl with leukemia tiger's tickets, a signed baseball and jersey.
Why would someone make up stories like this? I feel bad for the man, he seemed so nice, but it's sort of ridiculous that he would say those things!

    ReplyDelete
  146. He also mentioned, while at the Olive Garden in Southgate, that he had his own plane and was flying south that night. He claimed to be a retired fighter pilot.
Sweet guy, no need for silly stories though.

  147. Mr. 'Verlander' "strikes" again. He visited our chiropractic clinic in Brownstown, again today. He was happy and jovial but upset that his daughter (who has been pregnant every time he makes her an appointment for the past two years - longest pregnancy I've ever heard of!)missed her appointment. We really have gotten used to ignoring him but get a chuckle out of his stories he tells the patients in our lobby. Ahh, now he is a little famous. Our own urban legend!

  148. Mr. Dwight Verlander got me and my Mom at the Rite Aid on Telegraph in Flat Rock today ! I was very skeptical but the story of just got back from Lakeland today, was with my son, Justin who was just signed to $80mil, he bought my wife and I a house on Grosse Isle, and so on. I stood by the pharmacy to see what name he would give, said picking up for Verlander, but there was nothing there and he acted like his wife took it to the wrong place, yeah right ! It was funny, he was introducing himself to everyone he walked past.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Eek! Justin Verlanders' dad frequents my place of business on occasion...but today was another sort of interesting...A man came in ASKING about Dwight Verlander and said he has connections with Fox2 Hall of Shame and they wanted to do a bit on him (and wanted me to do a live interview) what?! Didn't this already happen in the past?! The man proceeded to joke about this insane old man, and made sure to brag about being buddies with Dean Cain...and showed me 3 photos that were all the same photo just cropped differently. Arrggh...I wish the crazies would go away!!!
