Detroit Tigers Prospect Report - 5/6/2006

As the season goes along, I'll be doing periodic updates on many of the Tiger prospects throughout the minor leagues. I'm not going to list them in any particular order. I'm just going to list some of the most interesting prospects at each level. I won't mention every prospect on every report, just ones that seem noteworthy at the time I'm writing it. I may occasionally even mention some marginal prospects who happen to be having good seasons. Here is this weeks report team by team:

Toledo Mudhens (AAA)
Record: 13-15

Wil Ledezma, had to leave his start this week when he strained a muscle in his side. Hopefully, he won’t lose to much time because he’s off to a great start this year - 2.65 ERA and a 40/8 K/BB ratio in 34 innings......Matt Mantei has now pitched 4 games and 5 innings without allowing a run although he’s having his usual control problems (5 walks). I expect to see him in Detroit fairly soon…..Zach Miner, obtained in the Kyle Farnsworth deal with the Braves has a 1.85 ERA in 34 innings pitched. Roman Colon, obtained in the same deal, pitched 3 scoreless innings in his first game of the year. He had been out of action with a sore biceps…..Josh Phelps had a big week going 9-16 with 3 homers and is now batting .307/.378/.534.

Erie Seawolves (AA)
Record: 11-17

Brent Clevlen has been a bit of a disappointment in the early going hitting .259/.352/.375. This is not totally unexpected as it took him a long time to get adjusted to A ball as well. Hopefully, it won’t take a full season this time. The one positive is his 14 walks in 28 games.....Tony Giarratano is still not hitting – a .233 batting average with no power ….. Humberto Sanchez is still on fire - 1.69 ERA and 46/13 K/BB ratio in 37 1/3 innings. Sanchez is a good prospect who has not put up great numbers for a full season yet. His strong start is a good sign…..Brian Rogers has a 1.25 ERA, and still no walks in 21 2/3 innings. He has 25 K.

Lakeland Tigers (A+)
Record: 14-14

Jeff Larish is not hitting for average but is walking a lot and showing some power: .263/.398/.475.....Jeff Frazier is hitting for some power but not getting on base much: .281/.317/.482......Clete Thomas rebounded this week going 11-27 with 3 home runs to raise his numbers to .274/.349/.425. He needs to cut down his k total which is now 38.....Wilken Ramirez has a groin strain and only played one game this week. Overall, he is still not hitting -.230 with little power and 28 strikeouts....Jair Jurrjens has lowered his ERA to 1.74 and has a 25/2 k/BB ratio in 31 IP....Kevin Whelan has a 2.45 ERA and 14 K in 11 IP…..Andrew Kown joined Lakeland after 16 scoreless innings in Western Michigan. He gave up one run in 4 innings in his first start for Lakeland.

Western Michigan Whitecaps (A)
Record: 19-8

Cameron Maybin had another good week going 8-17 and is now batting .333/.411/.527 while racking up outfield assists. He does need to cut down on his strikeouts though. He has struckout 29 times so far.....Catcher Dusty Ryan, who impressed me at Oneonta a couple years ago seems to be back on track batting .351/.448/.456 in 16 games…..Sendy Vazquez has a 1.04 ERA in 26 innings .....Ramon Garcia has a 1.46 ERA and 35/5 K/BB ratio in 37 innings….Reliever Orlando Perdomo has a 2.08 ERA and 14/3 K/BB ratio in 13 innings.
