The first one is good because it allows you to easily go back and forth between BA, SLG, OBP and BA, IWP, ISO.  The second one is appealing because (BB+HBP)/PA has more meaning as a stand alone stat. And, when it's done that way, BA times 2 plus the "walk rate" plus ISO power *is* OPS.  It's an interesting way of thinking about offensive value, I agree.
